CHAPTER SIX

Gemma’s fingers froze, poised over the keyboard. “The point?”

“We have an hour before you need to get ready. I’m sure we can think of something more interesting than typing to do for that time,” he said.

She continued with her typing as one of his hands found her breast. He touched her nipple through her sweater. How could he do that? Guess he was learning to deal with that elephant. And he was taking what he wanted.

Her fingers faltered. “I need to get this done before I leave.”

His hands stilled. “Do you have to keep reminding me?”

“Of what?”

“That you’re leaving. I know that you’ll be gone tomorrow.” He moved away from her. “I know this. I don’t need you to say it every ten minutes.”

She looked at him, expecting him to have two heads or demon eyes. Demonic possession would be the only reasonable expectation for his quick change in mood.  “I’m not reminding you all the time. I’m just not avoiding the subject like you seem to want to.”

“That’s right. Gemma’s always the one pointing out what everyone else doesn’t want to talk about. Maybe it’s okay if sometimes people don’t talk about things.”

“Why? You mad because you aren’t the martyr you thought you were in your marriage. That maybe you were at least a little complicit in the breakup?”

He shifted further away from her. “What’s that supposed to mean? I was talking about your leaving.”

“You’ve known all along that I was going to continue down the road.  Why is it upsetting now? You were looking forward to getting back to your quiet life,” she said.

He’d never protested her plans. Why now? It could only be that he was mad at her for clearing the air with Jessica.

“I am looking forward to it. But now Jessica is around, and my life won’t be quiet.”

“I didn’t bring her back. Nor did I get her pregnant. She doesn’t have any bearing on my plans. Don’t take this out on me.”

He leaned his head on the back of the couch. “I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. Now let me finish this and we’ll get to your task.”

He stood, looked at her as if she did have two heads, then strode to the kitchen. “Never mind. Not in the mood anymore.”

***

Why? He could have gotten laid. Most men would be happy with sex without strings. Why was he having such a problem with this by making it more complicated than it needed to be?

Because his heart felt differently than it had in years. He loved Gemma. He wanted her to stay, but he couldn’t ask her to give up her dream. Especially now with Jessica back and what she’d told him.

She thought he wouldn’t understand.  He had to let Gemma go. He loved her, and this dream was what she wanted.

He strode back into the living room as Gemma closed her laptop. She held up his flash drive. “Done.”

“I’m sorry.”

Her smile broadened. “Apology accepted. Now take me to bed, cowboy.”

He couldn’t help but grin. She put the laptop on the coffee table, then reached her arms out to him.

Scooping her up, he marched into his bedroom. He held her close as she nuzzled his neck, her arms around him. What he wouldn’t give to be able to do this every day.

But that wouldn’t happen.  He’d just have to enjoy her while she was here.

He put her down on the bed. Her eyes were dark with passion. For him. It had been a long time since anyone had looked at him like that. He didn’t want to give it up, but knew he couldn’t ask her to give up her dream.

In time, she’d fade to a sweet memory and his heart would go back behind its walls. For now, he’d just enjoy what she had to offer.

“Gemma.”

“I love my name in your mouth,” she breathed.

He put his body next to hers. Her hands roamed over his body as if feeling it for the first time.

“We can be slow.”

“I’d like that,” she whispered.

Her fingers took care of the buttons on his shirt. Then she put her warms hands on his chest. His nipples came alive. So did his dick. He slid her sweater over her head, revealing a hot pink bra that barely covered her breasts. They clearly wanted to be released.

“Will they come out and play?”

She laughed. “Of course.”

She reached behind her back, and with one hand, flicked the clasp.

“Neat trick. Where did you learn that?”

He hoped she didn’t tell him during stripper training.

“Summer camp. On a bet. I won everyone’s chocolate bars.”

He laughed. “Well, I enjoyed it.”

Her bra landed somewhere on the floor. They’d find it later. He’d help her look for it. Right now he had two tits to pay homage to.  Her eyes fells closed as he suckled first one then the other. Her groans made him even harder.

She tasted like ambrosia, a dish he’d never get tired of.

He sat back, then flicked one nipple with his finger. Her fingers dug into his arms. “Wow.”

“You like that?”

“No, I’m faking it. Of course I like that,” she said.

***

Gemma would have liked to stay in his bed forever. With Brandon and his magic hands on her breasts. Here whole body tingled from what he was doing to her.

Her vision was blurring, and spots appeared in front of her eyes. She had a humming in her ears. She couldn’t have concentrated on anything else if her life depended on it.

“Don’t stop, Brandon.”

Then she felt his warm breath waft across her neck. He nibbled at her ear, then her neck. Chills raced down her spine. Each time they made love, they seemed to learn more about each other. Brandon was becoming an expert on her body.

She’d miss this.

His mouth went down to her one nipple, and she arched her back to get it closer to him. His tongue ringed a circle around her nipple, before he took it into his mouth. He sucked, then let it loose.

He clearly was not in any hurry, but her sense of urgency had kicked up a notch.  She dug her fingers into his soft, dark hair.

“Mm,” she said, which all she was capable of at the moment was.

“So articulate.”

She couldn’t argue. No words formed in her mouth.  Just a groan escaping to his ears.

Then he moved to her other breast, doing the same, encircling with his tongue. Her nipple popping out of his mouth almost tickled. In a good way.

“Tasty,” he said.

His hands moved to her pants, his fingers delving below the waist of them.. She unzipped his, taking him out to play with.

“Looky what I found.”

And he was hard. For her. No one else. Just her. His shaft was hard and smooth in her hand.

“He’s happy to see you.”

“I can tell,” she said.

He leaned back, studying her face. He tucked some hair behind her ear. “You’re beautiful.”

She smiled. “You’re hard.”

“That’s a good thing isn’t it?”

Her laugh tap-danced out of her. “Of course.”

***

They had an hour. No need to rush this. He wanted memories for his long, cold winter nights without her. Her hand on his dick was heavenly. With gentle strokes, she brought him alive.

“I’m just about naked. It’s your turn,” he said.

Helping her out of her pants and panties, he buried his face into her pussy. He loved how she smelled. And she was wet and ready for him.

But he wanted to give her more. He wanted to give her memories for her long nights in Los Angeles.

He put her legs over his shoulders and licked.  His tongue teased her.

“Mm.”

He liked that she reacted. He wanted to have her pliant under him because she couldn’t move from the pleasure. Slow and steady would win this race. He began with his thumb, moving it over her clitoris in a circular motion.

She wiggled a little. “That’s wonderful.”

Her back arched, her legs spread a little wider. She became even wetter.  Her fingers fisted into the bedspread.

“Brandon.”

His name came out of her like whiskey on the rocks. He couldn’t help smiling. When a man spent as much time alone as he did, he had time to think about what he’d do when a woman happened to choose his port in a storm. Or his house in a snowstorm.

Who would have thought that it would really happen?

He could see she was getting close. His tongue took over, licking, and he sucked a little. She shivered and became a moving target. He put his hands on her torso to steady her.

But he didn’t stop licking and sucking. She wiggled as if trying to get away.

“Oh, God.”

This was better than his fantasy. He’d remember every noise she made. Every movement and jiggle from her body. She was under his command, and he liked being in control.

Just a little while longer. She was so close.

He put on finger into her, stroking gently. She was warm and wet, and he couldn’t wait to get his dick in there. But first she’d have to cum for him.

Her hands closed and opened, then closed again, grasping the covers. Her wiggling increased. Any minute now, and he wanted it to be her best orgasm ever.

Her moans and whimpers increased. This one was about her. Making her feel good. He’d have his chance.

And then her body stiffened. And he knew.

***

Colors exploded behind Gemma’s eyes. She heard a groan and then a scream, and wasn’t sure if those sounds had come out of her.

If she could have stayed right there, feeling that, she would have. Too bad it had to end. Her body kept twitching from the aftermath. When she could finally open her eyes, Brandon had rested his chin on her stomach.

“Good?”

“What the hell do you think?” she gasped.

He looked proud of himself. Like the cat that drank the cream. She couldn’t move.  She wanted to, but she was unable to. Now it was his turn, as soon as she could lift her limbs.

Why were they not working?

“I can’t move.”

Brandon laughed. “That was the goal.”

“Why?”

“Something to remember me by.”

His eyes grew darker, and she could barely see them through slit lids. He slid his body up hers, and she reveled in the hardness of it. The hardness of one specific body part.

As if her pleasure had turned him on.  That was an interesting concept. A real man who derived some of his own pleasure from hers. She hadn’t experienced that. She’d been in bed with some experts, but none had been this good. Because the emotion of this situation had been missing.

Her emotions or her lover’s? She didn’t know. What she did know, as Brandon took possession of her lips, was that she loved him. She chose not to think about that. She chose to be in that moment, enjoying his body and the aftershocks of the best orgasm she’d ever had.

“Wow.”

He murmured into her neck. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

He stopped for a moment his gaze laser-focused on her. “Good.”

Then he slid into her, and she couldn’t think anymore. Which was good, since she didn’t want to think about leaving this man behind. She didn’t want to think about driving the rest of the way across the country. She didn’t want to think about her heart breaking as she left Iowa.

His pace increased. In and out and pausing once in a while so that she couldn’t anticipate what he would do. Her good leg wrapped around him, but she gave his body freedom to move at will.

She wanted to rise up and meet his every stroke, but her foot hurt too much. Nor did she want to move her leg from around his waist. A dilemma, but she wouldn’t solve it with her orgasm building again.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Brandon watched as her eyes fell closed. Her fingernails dug into his back, and he thought that was the most delicious feeling on Earth.

Then he knew he was close. Farm report. Hog report. Hog futures. He tried to think about anything but the vibrant woman squirming beneath him. She was close.

But when he felt her vagina clench, he lost control and pumped into her until he’d emptied himself. His chest heaved as he held himself over her. Her breathing was just as hard. Despite not wanting to leave her, he slid himself out, then rested his body next to her.

She put a hand on his chest. “That.” Breath. “Was.” Breath. “Wonderful.”

He couldn’t help smiling. He’d given her what he wanted to give her. And he would have memories for a dark, cold night in the future. He’d remember the feel of her skin. Her nails digging into his back. Her vagina milking him dry. Her scent on his skin.

“Good.”

He rolled onto his back, taking her hand into his. She intertwined her fingers with his. “God, I hope I recover in time to sing.”

He laughed. “I didn’t touch your throat.”

Her gaze went to his. “No, you touched me much deeper.”

He didn’t know how to answer that, so he kissed her hand. She snuggled closer to him.

He could stay like this for the rest of his life. The passion she showed. The total commitment to the act was refreshing. Especially after Jessica, who he thought didn’t like having sex at all.

She must, since she was pregnant, but maybe she hadn't liked it with him.

Now he figured that maybe he hadn’t been such a good lover for her. He’d loved her, but not this way. Not knowing that the only way to show Gemma that he loved her was to let her go tomorrow.

He couldn’t tell her. He couldn’t be that vulnerable, but she’d go off knowing that one man in Iowa was rooting for her.

“So serious.”

She shifted onto her elbow and was now looking at him.

He tucked a hair behind her ear. “No, just, uh, mellow.”

“Good for you, too, huh?”

“Yep.”

“If I didn’t have this injury, I’d do the same for you.”

“It’s fine, Gemma. I enjoyed pleasing you,” he said.

And he did. This wasn’t just about him. This was about making it good for her. And he’d been successful at it. That was enough.

***

Gemma looked deep in his eyes, and thought she saw love. Oh no. That wasn’t good.

“What’s wrong?” Brandon said.

She smiled, covering her disbelief. There is no way that he loved her. She didn’t want him to love her. That would make leaving him that much harder.

Because she loved him.

“Nothing. Just, just satisfied beyond my wildest dreams.”

He puffed out his chest. “Glad I could help.”

She lightly punched his arm. “Don’t let it go to your head. I’ll expect a repeat performance tonight.”

“Oh? You think I perform on command?”

“I bet that if I wrapped my hand around you right now, you’d perform again.”

He smiled. “Probably. Men are so easy.”

“Only in bed. You’re so not easy the rest of the time,” she said, shifting onto her back.

“What’s that supposed to mean? Men are simple. Like Foxworthy said, we want a beer and to see something naked.”

Gemma shook her head. “You keep on thinking that.”

He shifted onto his elbow to look at her. “What?”

“I have had to manage you the whole time I’ve been here.”

“Manage me?”

“Well, cajole at least to get you to do anything.”

Why was she being so honest with him? None of it mattered since she was gone in less than twenty-four hours. Why did she go down this road? She’d never been this honest with guys she’d planned on staying with.

“Not to get in bed.”

“To talk to Jessica or let me see your recipes. Pulling teeth.”

He frowned. “You still did it, so I can’t be that hard. But then, you are a freight train.”

“Freight train?”

“You’ve never met an elephant in the room that you didn’t point out.”

“I just cut through the bullshit,” she said. She’d been accused of that her whole life. She didn’t see why this was a problem. Things were solved when she was around.

“That’s a good way of putting it.”

“Hey, you wouldn’t have your recipes typed in. Now you can get them formatted and published. If you want.”

“Mm.”

“You can’t argue, can you?”

“I’m not willing to.”

She glanced at his alarm clock. “I think we better get ready.”

“You get ready. It’ll take me ten minutes.”

“But I need your help,” she said.

***

Brandon helped Gemma with her outfit for the evening. She wore jeans and a nice blouse. He looked at the small buttons and wondered how his large hands would ever undo them. Guess that was a problem for later.

He liked taking in her scent. He would be hard by the end of dressing her, but he knew now was not the time.

Now she stood in the bathroom, balancing on crutches, doing her make up. He leaned on the doorjamb, watching her. Having never had a sister, he was fascinated by women and their make-up routines. Jessica had worn a lot of it in her younger days.

He preferred the fresh-faced look, and what Gemma did was to enhance the beauty she had. She didn’t look made up. She was subtle. She was gorgeous with or without make up.

“Is this interesting?”

“It is. I’m an only child. No sisters. Never really watched anyone do this.”

“Jessica didn’t wear make-up?”

“She did, but she did it in private. Never let me watch.”

Gemma shrugged, almost losing her balance. Brandon’s hand snaked out to keep her from falling. He loved the tingle from her touch.

What he didn’t want to admit was that he’d seen love in her eyes in bed. He didn’t want her to love him back. He could nurse his wounded heart when she was gone, but he didn’t want to think that she felt the same. If she did, he’d have to tell her.

She had a right to know.

But knowing Gemma, if she loved him, she would have said something.  He must have read her wrong.

“You better get dressed.”

“We still have fifteen minutes.”

“I don’t want to be late.”

“I am never late.”

“Good, don’t start now. Do you have another snappy shirt?”

“You going to tell me what to wear now?”

“You’ll be my date, so I want you to look presentable.”

“I think I have some jeans with cow shit on them.”

“Not funny.”

He chuckled as he put on clean jeans and another shirt from his rodeo days. With his trusty worn cowboy boots, he figured he looked okay.

“Wow,” Gemma said when he returned. “I see how you were a hit with the ladies on that circuit.”

He felt his face redden. He’d always been embarrassed by the attention he received from the rodeo groupies.

“You blushed. That’s adorable.” She went up on tiptoe on her one foot and kissed his nose. “Hat?”

“I have a few of those.”

“Not the one you use to work with,” she said.

He laughed again at her presumptuousness. Retrieving a hat he hadn’t worn in a few years, he put it on his head. Gemma appeared in the door to the bedroom.

“That’s hot.”

He’d never thought of himself as attractive, but Gemma seemed to think so.

“Hot?”

“Hot.”

***

Gemma could not get over how well Brandon cleaned up. It exhilarated her to know just what kind of body he had under those jeans.

And those jeans were to die for. Worn in, just enough, the pants hugged all the right parts. His shirt was unbuttoned enough to see his chest hair. Wouldn’t he be cold? Never mind. She enjoyed the view.

The hat topped it off perfectly. She hoped to knock that hat off his head later. Maybe with her mouth on his cock.

She licked her lips. She had delightful plans for their last night together. Having nothing to lose, she would be the pig tonight, not the chicken.

“What are you thinking?” he said.

She chuckled. “I promise, I’ll tell you later.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

“You bet. You ready?”

“Yeah, let me get the truck.”

She put on her coat with his help, then waited on the bench by the door. When she heard the big diesel engine, she told the dog farewell, and then she hobbled out onto the small porch. Brandon slid her into the cab, and handed her the crutches.

“Don’t forget, I need to pick up my car.”

He frowned. “Right.”

“The guy said he’d leave the key under the mat.”

Brandon drove her there. “Are you sure you can drive?”

“I can drive. It’s an automatic, and it’s my left foot that’s injured. I just hope he did it right.”

“You leaving him a check?”

“Yes. Already written.”

Brandon parked in front of a bay. Her Mustang sat in front of the other one. He helped her out, then waited until she started her car. A wind went right through him as he stood out in the cold. “When we get there, let me park the truck, then I’ll park your car.”

“Thanks.”

When they reached the bar, it was already hopping even though service didn’t start for ten more minutes. The sun was just finishing up its day. Gemma couldn’t think of where else she’d want to be on a Friday night. Her last Friday night in Iowa. Her last night with Brandon.

She shook away the thought. This was part of her life plan. Her dream. She had to keep telling herself that.

Brandon was a wonderful distraction. Nothing more. He’d go back to his life, maybe with Jessica, and she’d go meet that agent who could launch her career.

Brandon parked the truck. She stopped the Mustang by the front door and left it running. No one would steal it.

She would have waited for him, but the air was too cold.  When she opened the door, music was playing from the jukebox. People were seated. Gemma gave her ticket to the person sitting at a table by the door.

“Busy?” she asked.

“Yeah, we sold out when people heard that Jessica Steele was going to be here.”

Gemma nodded, knowing that would be true. She wondered if she would ever be that much of a draw. She hoped. If she ever made it to Hollywood. There was a certain cowboy who was making her think about changing her plans.

***

Brandon brought Gemma her guitar as she stood talking to some people that Brandon didn’t even know.  He approached the group, wondering why she hadn’t found a seat.

“Hi, this is Brandon. Brandon, these are Lyle and Wanda Love. Lyle owns the gas station and Wanda is a nurse at the urgent care.”

“Nice to meet you,” Brandon said.  To Gemma he said, “You learned all that in the time that I parked the truck?”

She shrugged. “People tell me things.”

Lyle shook Brandon’s hand. “How’s the ranch coming along?”

“I’m doing okay. I’m keeping my head above water so far,” Brandon said. He wasn’t sure why this man asked him that.

“Good to hear. I know a developer was looking at that land before you bought it,” Wanda said. “We were so worried.”

“A developer? What did he want to do with it?” Brandon asked.

“Build houses.”

Brandon shifted his hat on his head. “There isn’t a demand for housing here.”

“At one point, spur of the interstate was going to be built along with a business park,” Lyle said. “The developer wanted to get the land while it was still cheap.”

“What happened to that spur?” Brandon said.

Wanda smiled. “The bill was defeated in the legislature. Ringo Falls will stay a small town.”

“What’s the draw for a company?” Gemma said.

“Low taxes and a workforce that would be happy to have a job,” Lyle said.

“I see. Could you excuse us? I want to get a seat for Gemma.  She needs to get off of her feet,” Brandon said.

“Nice to meet you Brandon and Gemma,” Wanda said.

Brandon held Gemma’s guitar as he directed her to the nearest empty table. Helen had put more out for this shindig.  “I think we found the last table.”

“Helen reserved it for us. I invited Jessica to sit with us. She isn’t singing until after the meal.”

“That’s fine. Where is she?”

“In some room she’s using as a dressing room. Probably putting on her make-up.”

“Right.” He’d seen a picture of Jessica with her stage make-up. Too much.  Even more than she had put on while married to him. “You don’t get a dressing room?”

She waved a hand. “No need, I’m just the opening act. I don’t need the star treatment.”
