“Why don’t you come to our house?” said Sam. “Mother will be home from the hospital and you two might as well get to know one another. I’m not going to work for Roger any more, but I should be able to steer quite a lot of work his way. Maybe he’d take Ellis on as an apprentice.”

“Would you like that, Ellis?” Holly asked. “My brother’s not the easiest person to work for, but he is a first-rate craftsman. You might learn something useful if you could stick with him for a while.”

“Yes, and you’d be doing honest work for a change,” said Claudine. “Go ahead and fix it up if you can, Holly. As for myself, I’m going to sell out the shop here and let Bert and Annie move in downstairs. They can take care of Mother and keep house for Ellis. I’ll get a job with one of the big city antique dealers and stay there till I’ve really learned the business. Then I’ll set up my own shop again. But it won’t be in Jugtown.”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said Holly, pulling Sam’s arm tighter around her. “Jugtown’s not such a bad place, once you’ve gotten to know the people.”
