“Are there others?” I asked.

It was a bold question. It was none of my business if he saw other girls. Before he could answer, I quickly added: “Because I don’t think the nature of our relationship allows for more than two. If you’re going to teach me, I want your full attention.”

His face was expressionless. His silence made me uncomfortable. I felt as if I’d crossed a line. He was supposed to be giving me orders- not the other way around. I still had a lot to learn about being a submissive.

“Okay,” he said.

“You’ll only see me?” God, I was sounding desperate. I hoped he didn’t notice.

“Yes, as long as you’ll have me.”

This was a puzzling statement. I felt lucky to have him. It didn’t occur to me, he would feel grateful. Then it hit me: everything we did together, he did with my consent. I was the one with the power in this relationship. This man, who had the world at his feet, could only act with my permission.

I smiled.

“What?” he asked.

“Let’s just say, I’m a quick study.”

He looked amused. I wished I could read his thoughts.

“I’ll be here at nine AM tomorrow.” I turned and began to leave.

“Make it seven. That’s when the hard work starts,” he called out behind me.

“Yes, sir,” I said, smiling wickedly as I closed his office door behind me.

As I waited for the elevator, I suddenly remembered the check. I looked around quickly to make sure no one was watching, then unfolded it. It was made out for twenty thousand dollars.

In a daze, I folded it and put it my purse. As I stepped onto the elevator, I wondered what James meant when he said, ‘the hard work begins tomorrow.’
