Chase broke away from Letty just in time for the five-year-old to vault into his arms. “I have a new friend, and her name's Karen and she's got a pony, too. I like school a whole bunch, and Mrs. Webber let me hand out some papers and said I could be her helper every day.”

Chase hugged the little girl. “I'm glad you like school so much, sweetheart.” Then he put his hand on Letty's shoulder, pulling her to him.

Letty leaned into his strength and closed her eyes, savoring these few moments of contentment. She'd found her happiness in Chase. She'd come home, knowing she might die, and instead had discovered life in its most abundant form. Spring Valley was their future—here was where they'd thrive.
